The Department of Agriculture (DA) acknowledged the vital contributions of farmers and fishers to a thriving and prosperous economy as it kicked off the celebration of the 2024 Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month at the DA Central Office on May 20, 2024.
With the theme “Magsasaka at Mangingisda katuwang tungo sa Masaganang Bagong Pilipinas,” Agriculture Chief Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. emphasized the crucial role of farmers and fisherfolk in sustaining a vibrant economy. He encouraged everyone to support these food heroes through various DA initiatives, including the modernization and mechanization of agriculture.
“We must continue supporting and empowering our food producers, processors, and other agri-fishery stakeholders by modernizing and mechanizing Philippine agriculture. By embracing modern farming techniques, mechanization, and sustainable practices, agriculture advances to boost productivity and efficiency, maintaining its competitiveness and profitability, and meeting the demands of a growing population,” he stated.
Pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 33, signed on May 21, 1989, the month of May is proclaimed as Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month to recognize the vital role farmers and fishers play in contributing to the goals of alleviating poverty, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainability.
After the ribbon-cutting, DA officials visited the food stalls, which included 13 Kadiwa partner exhibitors showcasing various products such as vegetables, fruits, poultry, coffee, and other processed goods. #### (Ira Y. Cruz, DA-AFID)
